The long-awaited Borderlands 3 released back in September and if you've been itching to try it, but were wary of buying the thing outright, this weekend is your chance. Developer Gearbox Software is opening the doors wide, letting anyone on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 play the loot shooter for free.

Announced during the latest episode of the Borderlands web show, the Borderlands 3 free weekend kicks off tomorrow, November 22 and runs through to November 24. I'd suspect the game will be receiving an extra-tempting discount alongside the free weekend, making it awfully difficult to say no to buying Borderlands 3.

Along with the news of the free weekend, Gearbox announced the first major campaign DLC pack. Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot will continue the vault hunters' journey, adding in a space station casino that's just waiting to be robbed blind.

You'll be joining Moxxi's crew for the job, taking on Hyperion security and the casino's patrons to pull off a big score. It's been a while since I've been to a casino, but I wouldn't want to mess with the old women who monopolise the one-armed bandits.

That DLC will be out on December 19, and it's the first of four planned expansions.

Alongside the free weekend, Gearbox is publishing a patch that includes a new high-level co-op Takedown mission. Maliwan's Blacksite is an ultra-tough four-player mission that takes place on a new map and features three new bosses. You could try to take the thing on on your own, though it will be a pretty challenging feat, or you can enter public matchmaking to find a couple of colleagues. Apparently it will take nearly an hour to work through the mission, so it's long enough to be a good evening's gaming if you need to take multiple runs at the thing, whether because those bosses are too much to handle or because you want to rinse it for loot.
