Tragically a young woman has been killed at a showing of The Forever Purge in California. The 18-year-old was shot and died from her injuries and one other audience member, a 19-year-old man, was also injured during the shooting at the cinema. It was not immediately obvious to the staff working that the crime had happened during the film, no gunshots had been heard by the workers. The bodies of the victims were only found hours after being shot as staff begun cleaning the theatre.

The 18-year-old, Rylee Goodrich was shot and killed by the assailant while her friend and TikTok star Anthony Barajas is currently on life support following the incident. Both were found in the theatre after the film had ended. One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and robbery after the weapon used in the incident was identified at the man's home.

Rylee was a small business owner and had earned herself a STEM scholarship. Her friend Barajas is a TikTok star with just under a million followers on the social media platform. He is still in the hospital on life support following the attack.

It seems that the connection to The Forever Purge could be just a coincidence. The police held a press conference which was recorded and can be found on The Daily Mail website in which a reporter asks if the violence in the film was connected to the act of violence the perpetrator carried out. The answer was that during the investigation, no connection had yet been discovered.

If you are unaware of the premise of The Purge films, the idea is that for 12 hours each year, any and all criminal acts are legal. People can do anything they want during this time to alleviate some of the problems people experience during the rest of the year, including murdering others. The Forever Purge is the scenario that carries out when those who like taking part in The Purge continue celebrating it past the 12 hours dedicated, sending America into a state of turmoil and fascism.

These films are notoriously violent but offer an interesting premise of what people would do if they had the option to act in a violent manner for a limited period of time. But the police have not revealed anything to suggest that these matters are related and we don't know if the gunman was inspired by the film at all.
