Your 'Borderlands 3' Character Chuckles If You Do 69 Damage, Because Sure

Nice.

Borderlands 3 is an incredibly serious and mature game for grown ups. It's come under quite a bit of criticism since launch for its "dated" toilet humour and cartoon violence, but that's unfair guys. Borderlands 3 is a classy game for classy people. On an unrelated note, it's just been discovered that your in-game character will let out a subtle chuckle anytime they deal 69 damage to a character.

If you don't understand why the number 69 specifically warrants a giggle from your character, I'm not going to explain it to you. Maybe ask your dad. Actually, maybe don't ever ask your dad and continue to live a life of ignorant bliss. This "hilarious" discovery was first made by Brunky89890 over on Reddit, who shared a clip of the Easter egg in question. It's an incredibly subtle laugh, but if you listen closely you'll hear an unmistakable noise of amusement at the exact moment that 69 damage is dished out.

Given the fact that the entire humour of the Borderlands franchise revolves around crap like this, I can't imagine for a second that it was a mere coincidence, and must have been an intentional joke snuck in by the developers. Take a look at it for yourself below. It didn't exactly split my sides, but I did find myself smiling at just how utterly puerile and dumb a joke it is.

Borderlands 3, just like every game in the series so far, really does go all in on delivering a level of humour that's probably best described as... lowbrow. That's not to say it's particularly bad, as there's quite clearly an audience for this kind of thing, but some critics have argued the latest entry has perhaps tried a little bit too hard to one-up the comedy in the previous games, and the result has been a little grating.

Of course, whether or not you mind it is entirely a matter of personal taste. I'm never one to turn down a little bit of toilet humour every now and again, and beyond some divisive jokes, Borderlands 3 is still an engaging anarchic loot-shooter at heart, and is easily the best at what it does - even if what it does involves references to Rick & Morty, and a gun called the Big Succ. That's fine.
