Zack Snyder Is Making A Gritty Star Wars Inspired Sci-Fi Movie For Netflix

You know what Star Wars needs? More grit and edge. Thank goodness for director Zack Snyder, then. The man behind Man Of Steel and Army Of The Dead is bringing his inimitable blend of slick set pieces and slow motion to a brand-new sci-fi project said to be inspired by George Lucas' galaxy far, far away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder's next project is tentatively titled Rebel Moon, and is inspired by Star Wars and the works of Akira Kurosawa. Lucas famously borrowed heavily from Kurosawa's movies during development of the original Star Wars trilogy (and beyond), so I guess we've come full circle.

Snyder is set to direct and producer Rebel Moon, which is to be another Netflix exclusive. He's also co-writing the script with Army of the Dead's Shay Hatten and 300's Kurt Johnson. Much like Army Of The Dead, Snyder smells franchise potential here and hopes that Rebel Moon can mark the start of a universe that can he build on.

Rebel Moon is actually based on an old Star Wars pitch that Snyder made years back. The film focuses on a colony living in peace out on the galaxy edge that finds itself thrust in conflict when it falls under the foul gaze of a tyrannical ruler by the name of Balisarius. So far so Star Wars. In an effort to take Balisarius down once and for all, the colony sends a young woman with a mysterious past to neighboring planets to form an alliance and make a last stand. Okay, I can get on board with this.

Rebel Moon will reportedly start production in early 2022.
