How many times have you found yourself enjoying the sedate pace and retro visuals of Stardew Valley, only to catch yourself wondering what the charming farming sim would be like if it was filled with zombies hungry for your flesh instead of friendly villagers?
I would imagine the answer to that is "not at all", but that's okay! Zelter, a new zombie-survival/crafting/adventure game that's been described as a "post-apocalyptic take on Stardew Valley" answers the question nobody asked, and does so brilliantly. Developed by G1 Playground, Zelter just came out on Steam today and is well worth a look.
If you always like the look and general idea of games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon but wished they had higher stakes and a little more action, this could be the game for your. Zelter drops you into a zombie-infested world and leaves you to build your own shelter. From there you'll have to gather resources, craft tools, and befriend other survivors to turn your shelter in a thriving community.

Of course, just because you've built a fortress with a small army won't keep the zombies out. You'll need to build and maintain defenses like machine gun turrets to keep the monsters at bay, and keep an extra eye out when you're in the world foraging for supplies.
"Zelter takes a pixelated art-style, adds a dash of atmosphere and a touch of upbeat and sometimes creepy music, and mixes it all together for a post-zombie-apocalypse crafting and survival experience like no other," reads the press release.
"Use your skills to craft tools, start a farm, and head out into the world to scavenge supplies while saving lives. Zombies will come for you eventually - so prepare yourself and your home by readying your defenses and making sure your weapons are locked and loaded. After all - a zombie apocalypse is tough to overcome, even if it's in a pixelated universe. But don't lose hope - keep crafting and carry on!"

Zelter is the product of a very successful Kickstarter that concluded earlier this year, and the developers will continue to to gather feedback from players and create community-driven content to "expand and improve" the experience! In other words, it really is basically Stardew Valley with zombies... and that's enough of a pitch to win me over.
