Gears Of War headed to PlayStation 5, it appears

Gears of War could soon be released on PlayStation 5

The Gears of War franchise is one of Microsoft’s most popular video game properties so it’s unthinkable that this series could jump ship to make its way over to Sony’s PlayStation brand, right?

Recently, rumours have been making the rounds that Microsoft is going third-party and perhaps even stepping away from hardware development. If you were a gamer in the late 80s to early 2000s, you would know that SEGA was a major player in the console market and right now, you’ll be getting a case of Deja Vu.

However, with the continued rise of Nintendo and the emergence of Sony’s original PlayStation console, SEGA struggled to keep afloat with its competitors. As a hardware developer, it closed its doors in 2001 with the Dreamcast being the company's last console. Now, SEGA makes video games for the likes of Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox.

Thankfully the one major difference between SEGA and Microsoft going third-party is that Microsoft is not struggling financially. Microsoft is a thieving billion-dollar company and if the rumours are true that it’s shifting to third-party video game releases and leaving the console market behind, it’s likely a strategic plan to make even more money.

As such, the internet has been rife with speculation that the likes of Hi-Fi RUSH, Sea of Thieves, Starfield and even possibility of the upcoming Indiana Jones and The Great Circle eventually being released on PlayStation 5. Just a few short weeks ago this would seem like an impossible scenario. Yet, if these rumours come to fruition, could this mean that we’ll also see the likes of Halo, The Elder Scrolls VI and the topic of today’s discussion, Gears of War released on the blue brand? That once impossible thought could soon become a reality according to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb.

Other than the likes of the aforementioned games, Gears of War is reportedly under consideration to make the jump. “The other one that I’ve heard that’s definitely under consideration—it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen, but it’s in talks is Gears of War,” claimed Grubb on a recent episode of the Giant Bomb YouTube show.

It remains unclear at this time which Gears of War titles may be released on PlayStation whether it’s the classic titles or the yet-to-be-released Gears 6 (it seems weird just typing that). If I were to take a guess, let’s say that Gears 6 will one day be released on PlayStation 5, it wouldn't surprise me if there’s a six-month to one-year timed exclusivity in place on Xbox, before PlayStation gamers get to play it on Sony’s console.

What kind of world would we live in playing Halo and Gears of War on PlayStation? It's truly baffling but somewhat exciting nonetheless. That being said, I wouldn't expect to see Uncharted or The Last of Us on Xbox any time soon, but Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation is increasingly more likely.
