George R.R. Martin Contracted COVID At Comic Con

George R.R. Martin has tested positive for COVID-19 following San Diego Comic Con.

I’m sure you’ve noticed it. Game of Thrones fans are stirring from their three year hiatus. It’s a magical time. Despite the fact that Thrones’ eighth season left a sour taste for many, House Of The Dragon has got us all hyped again.

At San Diego Comic Con, HBO dropped the latest trailer for the series - which centres around the fabled ‘Dance of the Dragons - and fans quickly shared their excitement online. Someone else who’s looking forward to the series is none other than author George R.R. Martin. After an action-packed weekend at SDCC, Martin hoped to attend the House Of The Dragon premiere but is unfortunately not able to after contracting COVID-19.

Martin actually voiced his concerns regarding COVID-19 prior to attending SDCC. On his blog, he wrote, “Truth be told, I am also a tad anxious. I have managed to avoid getting COVID so far, knock wood… but if this Comic Con is like the last one I went to, I am going to be in one big room with 150,000 other people, some of whom may not have been as careful as we have.”

He continued, “I do not want COVID, not even a mild case, so please be advised, I will be doing all I can to prevent that. I will be masked almost all the time. I will not be shaking hands, sorry. Or even bumping fists. [...] I cannot get sick. I have too much work to do.”

Sadly, Martin did indeed contract the virus but thankfully, he’s reported that his symptoms are very mild. In a YouTube update, Martin said, “Yes, I am positive for COVID. I was as startled as any of you because I didn’t have any symptoms, or very minor symptoms.” Martin went on to note that he had a light cough, and expressed his disappointment at not being able to attend the House Of The Dragon premiere. We wish Martin a speedy recovery.
