'Gotham Knights' Trailer Shows First Proper Look At Batgirl

Barbara Gordon showcases her epic alias Batgirl in a brand new Gotham Knights trailer.

Gotham Knights is a mere three months away, and I can’t believe I’m saying that. Officially announced back in August 2020 during DC Fandome, Gotham Knights has been affected by several delays. When updates became non-existent, fans worried about the future of the game but it’s now scheduled for release on 25 October of this year.

Gotham Knights centres around a version of Gotham where Bruce Wayne is dead. Instead, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood take over as Gotham City’s protectors. Yesterday, during San Diego Comic Con, WB Games Montreal unveiled a first look at Batgirl in action.

Take a look at the brand new Gotham Knights Batgirl character trailer below.

The character spotlight showcases Batgirl’s combat prowess, including her melee abilities and a nifty retractable nunchaku that appears to be her weapon of choice. In the voiceover, Batgirl says, “Protecting people runs in my veins. No matter what alias I go by, that’s who I am. That’s who I’ll always be. Gotham has called, and I have answered.”

You may recall that earlier this year, there was some controversy surrounding the character. The game’s official synopsis claimed that Batgirl / Barbara Gordon had overcome paralysis (attained via a gunshot wound) by retraining herself. This trope is widely condemned as it perpetuates a harmful stereotype. It suggests that people can ‘fix’ disabilities.

WB Games Montreal worked with the group AbleGamers in order to rethink the character. You’ll now see Barbara completing rehabilitation exercises between missions at the Knights’ hideout, and both her Batgirl suit and regular clothing will include a back brace.

Gotham Knights is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The game was originally scheduled to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but these versions were cancelled earlier this year as Gotham Knights decided to go new-gen only.
