'GTA 5' New-Gen Release Is Already Being Review Bombed By Angry Fans

The new-gen re-release of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S might just be the best way to play the game without forking out for a high-end PC.

Rockstar's critically acclaimed 2013 game looks and runs better than ever, with improved resolution and framerate, faster loading times, and even some slick new DualSense specific features on PlayStation 5.

Despite all these new bells and whistles, not everyone is thrilled about this latest re-release of GTA V. When the port was first announced back in 2020, Rockstar referred to the new-gen version as "expanded and enhanced". Evidently, there are some players who feel that the new version hasn't done enough to be classed as expanded or enhanced.

Over on Metacritic, the game's PS5 and Xbox Series X versions have received almost exclusively negative reviews from users who are unhappy that the re-release hasn't added anything new. To be fair, Rockstar never actually promised new content for the single-player portion of GTA V, with "expanded" more likely referring to the game's constantly evolving - and now standalone - GTA Online component.

At the time of writing, GTA V has a user score of 3.2 on PS5 and 2.3 on Xbox Series X. Compare this to the game's 8.4 on PS4 and 7.9 on Xbox One, and it's clear we have some very unhappy customers. Of course as of right now the number of people actually complaining on Metacritic is fairly minimal, but they do make up the majority of users who have reviewed the re-release on the site.

And while a number of those users are throwing the term "cash grab" at Rockstar over the re-release, it is worth noting that the new-gen GTA V is currently available for a reduced price on both consoles.

Whether you feel a tenner is too much for enhanced visuals and improved loading times is entirely a matter of personal taste, of course. But if you don't think it's worth the money now, you definitely won't want to get it when the price goes up in the next few months.
