'Grand Theft Auto 6' Hacker May Have Also Struck Uber, Microsoft

Uber suspects that the culprit behind the company's data breach could have also been involved in the Rockstar Games hack.

The gaming news that I imagine everyone is going to be talking about for the next month is last weekend’s huge GTA 6 leak. A bunch of gameplay videos surfaced online and Rockstar Games released a statement yesterday to confirm that the company had “suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto”.

Naturally, many have been left wondering who the culprit, or culprits, may be and as VGC reports, some have been linking the attack to a recent Uber data breach, including the transport giant itself.

In a statement released by Uber regarding their breach, the company detailed their suspicions: “We believe that this attacker (or attackers) are affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so,” the statement reads. “This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies, and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia and Okta, among others. There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”

At the time of writing, however, it hasn’t been confirmed that the attacks on Rockstar Games and Uber were by the same group, or that Lapsus$ is the one behind either. However, Uber’s investigations are ongoing, and there’s no doubt that Rockstar will be looking into matters too.
