'GTA 6' Split Between Two Time Periods, Says Insider

'GTA 6' Split Between Two Time Periods, Says Insider

A tale of two cities

Where will Grand Theft Auto VI be set? It's a question fans have been asking for coming up to a decade, with dozens of YouTubers, leakers, and supposed industry insiders all offering their own answers.

The most popular recurring theory is that the upcoming Rockstar Games epic will take place in Vice City, with multiple - and reliable - insiders all hinting at a constantly evolving open-world map.

Take a look at some of the best Grand Theft Auto V wins and fails below!

While Rockstar has yet to officially confirm anything beyond the fact that a new GTA game is in development, a new insider has come forward with fresh claims about GTA VI's location, protagonists, and multiple time periods.

An alleged leaker by the name Onion00048 has suggested that GTA VI will take place in Vice City, but also feature Liberty City and parts of South America. We'd previously heard rumours of multiple cities and a Narcos-inspired drug smuggling story for the game, so this isn't too out of the blue.

What is interesting is the suggestion that GTA VI will take place across two distinct time periods. According to the leaker, the game will take GTA V's multiple protagonist approach one step further by having those protagonists decades apart. The first half of the game is rumoured to be set in 1985, with the final half of the game taking place in modern day. I'd assume after that players will be able to zip between the two decades freely for open-world stuff.

Onion also teased that we should hear something official about the game before the end of this year, hopefully around the autumn.

As always, however, take these rumours with a hefty grain of salt. Multiple cities set decades apart would essentially double Rockstar's workload. You certainly couldn't just throw a handful of 80's cars into the same map and expect people to believe it was a different period, could you? Given this, and the reports that Rockstar is keen to avoid crunch this time around, I'd keep those expectations very much in check.
