'GTA Online' Could Get More Single-Player Content After ‘The Contract’

Rockstar knows that not everyone wants to complete missions as a team

The newly added update ‘The Contract’ brings something very unusual to the DNA of GTA Online - it’s content that can be completed entirely solo, which is pretty exceptional stuff given the multiplayer focus of the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto offshoot.

Clocking in at some 10 hours of brand-new gameplay, ‘The Contract’ has been very well received by GTA Online players - and yes, you do need to play it while others in Los Santos are getting up to mischief, but at no point does the Dr Dre-starring update make you squad up to complete an objective. And in a new interview at USA Today, Rockstar has dropped a hint that further single-player content could yet come to GTA Online.

Rockstar North’s studio co-head Rob Nelson told writer Kirk McKeand: “I just think having the option for players is a nice thing. It’s something that we’ve heard from players that they wanted more of. It’s tough sometimes if you want to just jump in and you’ve got to wait. So if we can make something work as a solo player, then we should.”

Which sounds promising for GTA Online players who have enjoyed the structure of ‘The Contract’. Continuing, Nelson explained that the focus, of course, is on multiplayer mayhem, but there’s no reason that if there’s demand for solo play, Rockstar can’t add more suitable content going forward.

“We often want to incentivise co-op play, but maybe not all the time,” he says, adding that ‘The Contract’ represents the “strongest narrative” in GTA Online since it launched in October 2013. (Yes, 2013. What is time, even?) Elsewhere in the USA Today piece, which you can read in full here, Nelson talks about how Dr Dre collaborated closely with Rockstar on ‘The Contract’ and sent the studio plenty of all-new music; and the actor who plays Franklin, one of the protagonists of Grand Theft Auto V, discusses how he appears in the new online update.

“Franklin is a boss, he gets to call the shots now,” says Shawn ‘Solo’ Fonteno. “I get to stick my chest out a little. Franklin’s a little more mature, like me. When all these high-power people in the game need something fixed, they go to Franklin. It feels good for me, this far out from GTA V and remembering all the scripts; the Franklin that I knew back then to where he’s landed felt good.”

What neither interviewee mentions in the piece, however, is anything to do with Grand Theft Auto 6 - but we’ve recently heard that the plan for the as-yet-unannounced new game is that it’ll be “less edgy”, and there may even be easter eggs for it hidden in GTA Online right now.
