'GTA Trilogy' Gets Impressive Texture Overhaul That Greatly Improves Game

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition has fallen about as far short of our expectations as it's possible to get. The remastered versions of GTA IIIVice City, and San Andreas should have been a slam-dunk, but they'll go down in history as one of Rockstar's most embarrassing blunders.

The remastered collection was so broken that it had to be pulled from sale on PC on its launch weekend, and Rockstar has been flooded with complaints and refund requestsGTA: The Trilogy even ended up as the worst-rated game of 2021, if only briefly. While the company has apologised and promised to issue refunds and fixes, it's too little too late for some.

Take a look at some of the best GTA: The Trilogy wins and fails below.

Fortunately, modders have been hard at work fixing many of the more glaring issues with the remasters. Over the last few weeks, fans with the know-how have worked to improve the horrendous rain effects in the three games, and even restore the fog to San Andreas to help bring back the game's sense of scale and mystery.

Naturally, the mods are only growing more ambitious, and we now have our very first HD texture overhaul for GTA: The Trilogy.

The new mod packs from QTmodz and Instanity666 do exactly what they say on the tin: these are all-new and improved textures for each of the free games that drastically improves the overall look and feel. QTmodz’s Texture Pack adds in new road and pavement textures for San Andreas, while Instanity666’s covers GTA III and Vice City.

Instanity666 also released a mod fixing the aforementioned rain effects, so they're really out here doing the lord's work. Or Rockstar's work, I guess. You can download the texture packs for all three games herehere and here via NexusMods. It's undoubtedly only a matter of time before we start to see even more mods that enhance the graphics, and I'm eager to see what folk come up with.
