High On Life may not have been an overwhelming hit with critics, but it is proving popular with Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Squanch Games’ latest title was a day one Game Pass release and to say that Xbox subscribers are enjoying the latest offering would be an understatement. High On Life is, in fact, currently more popular than Minecraft.

I said High On Life didn’t quite gel with critics. In truth, the game landed a score of 68% over on Metacritic which is more respectable than you might think. It’s also a game that wasn’t made widely available for review, so make of that what you will. If you’re a fan of Rick And Morty, I’m sure you’ll find something to enjoy in High On Life. After all, it’s essentially a FPS complete with never ending Rick And Morty-esque dialogue. It seems to have found a wider fanbase though of people just looking for something a little bit different.

Take a look at High On Life in action below.

As reported by PCGamesN, High On Life’s popularity has skyrocketed on Game Pass with the title soaring past FIFA 22, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Halo Infinite, and even Minecraft. Given the game’s lukewarm critical reception, it’s an admirable feat. Minecraft has legions of longstanding dedicated fans, plus High On Life only released shortly after LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was also added to Game Pass. Somehow though, it’s fended off all competition.

While we celebrate the fact that High On Life is Xbox’s most successful third-party launch ever, it does highlight the absence of Xbox first-party exclusives this year. Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 may be among the most popular Game Pass titles, but both released in 2021. Xbox Game Studios boss Phil Spencer admitted that they’ve “been a little light” this year, but are looking ahead to 2023 which will bring Redfall and Starfield.

High On Life is by no means the longest game but if you are playing it and don’t want the fun to end, writer Justin Roiland previously teased that there are “so many off-the-golden-path things in this game that people are going to continue to be discovering for months.” That’s exactly what I love to hear said about a game. Happy exploring.
