Hefty 'Hogwarts Legacy' Pricing Appears Online, Dividing Fans

Better head to Gringotts

Hogwarts Legacy prices have started to appear online, and fans aren't at all happy with the rumoured asking price of the Harry Potter RPG on new-gen consoles.

As per VGC, Hogwarts Legacy is expected to set customers back £70 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This, unfortunately, seems to be the standard price for most new-gen games, of course. But the real kicker is that there doesn't seem to be the option of a free upgrade path for those hoping to get the PS4/Xbox One version and update at a later date.

Here in the UK, GAME is charging £69.99 for Hogwarts Legacy on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while the PS4/Xbox One version of the game is £59.99. While it's worth noting these prices may well be placeholders, and we'll have to wait until the game appears on the digital stores for both platforms until we know for sure.

Slightly more concerning is that we haven't heard anything about a free new-gen upgrade path yet. Most major third-party games released so far, including Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Elden Ring, and Battlefield 2042, have all offered free upgrades on both platforms.

While Warner Bros. has yet to rule it out, VGC points out that GameStop's box art for Hogwarts Legacy on Xbox One is suspiciously lacking the same Xbox Series X message present on other upcoming games, such as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

A number of fans have already taken to social media to bemoan the apparent new-gen pricing. On the Xbox Series X subreddit, various users are advising to simply wait a few months, as they believe the game will swiftly come down in price.

"But the way games are patched after launch to make them better practically begs me to just buy it six months later fully patched and half the price," writes one user.

"Probably less than $50 in a couple months too," remarked another. "Games go on sale quick nowadays."

"It's not that it's too expensive for me, it's that it's blatantly greedy and I won't support them in thinking it's acceptable," one Twitter user said in response to a thread about the rising cost of video games. "That Hogwarts Legacy game is coming in at $70 and I'll wait until it's lowered to a reasonable price before getting it now."

Hogwarts Legacy is currently aiming for a "Holiday 2022" release date, so expect more information soon.
