After months of rumours, The Last of Us Part 1 was finally confirmed by Naughty Dog earlier this month. The rumours were so prevalent that the game already felt like a done deal but seeing the trailer truly brought home that we’ll soon have our hands on this beauty.

The game is scheduled to release on 2 September 2022, and the graphics sure do look incredible. The game promises “a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernised gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options.” The Last of Us Part 1 will certainly offer a new-gen experience, and it’s got the chonky file size to prove it.

If you’ve played The Last of Us Part II, you’ll recall that that game also boasted a hefty file size. When a game arrives on two discs, you know it means business. The Last of Us Part II came in at 78GB, whilst 2013’s The Last of Us was just 48GB.

The Last of Us Part 1 is a certified chungus, stealing the crown for the biggest file size at 79GB. Unlike Part II which was released on the PlayStation 4, The Last of Us Part 1 will adopt the PlayStation 5’s new-gen hardware so we’d expect an increased file size.

That being said, this is a major step up from the 2013 original. It’s worth noting that the original game is around half the length of Part II so whilst the chonky file size can be attributed to the new-gen graphics, could this also be hinting that Part 1 will have an extended runtime? I’d be surprised if Naughty Dog didn’t sneak in a few surprises. I cannot wait to find out either way.
