Mafia: Definitive Edition is free to download right now

Don't forgetaboutit.

Right now, Mafia: Definitive Edition is free to claim and install for select players, and the silver lining is that you've got nearly a whole month to get on this giveaway.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is "faithfully recreated from the ground up, with a new game engine, expanded story, new and refined modern gameplay features, re-recorded orchestral score, and more" from developer Hangar 13. Released in 2020, the game met with generally positive reviews, praising it for its exceptional visuals and the revival of one of the best stories in the Mafia series. In spite of this, some felt let down by dated mechanics and the fact that it now pales in comparison to more modern dramas and shooters.

After the launch, though, Hangar 13 rolled out an update that offered custom HUD options, new Free Ride goodies, squashing of a scattering of bugs and the new Noir Mode with a vintage black-and-white filter. The Quarry has a similar feature to riff off the horror movies of the '50s and I definitely recommend switching that filter on for a totally new experience. I know it doesn't sound like much but it makes a major difference.

In sum, it's probably one for those with rose-tinted spectacles for the original 2002 title, and that's not a bad thing. And it's free so there's nothing lost if you do give the gangster storyline a spin and find it wanting.

As part of PlayStation Plus, subscribers on the Essential, Extra and Premium tier can claim Mafia: Definitive Edition, OlliOlliWorld, Evil Dead: The Game, and Destiny: Beyond Light before 6 March. The remainder of the offerings for the more expensive tiers are yet to be revealed, but as soon as they are, you'll be the first to know.
