‘Eternals’ Post-Credits Scene Teases Surprising Marvel Hero Team Up

‘Eternals’ Post-Credits Scene Teases Surprising Marvel Hero Team Up

The future of the MCU is looking... interesting.

The post-credits scene for Eternals has Marvel fans in a flap with off-screen return of a superhero who was a household name back in the ‘90s.

Obviously, spoilers for Eternals follow. That’s your warning if you’ve not seen the film yet. Go! Get out of here!

Let’s cover the mid-credits and post-credits scenes. The former is the introduction of Starfox and Pip the Troll to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Starfox is played by none other than Harry Styles. Yes, the singer-songwriter is the brother of Thanos. What a weird sentence. And, Patton Oswalt is Pip the Troll, and he’s actually already appeared as the numerous Koenigs in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Not that Marvel is averse to using the same actor to play different characters, with examples like Johnny Storm and Captain America both played by Chris Evans and Minn-Erva and Sersi both played by Gemma Chan. I’m veering off topic. What we’re here to talk about is the post-credits scene and that ever so intriguing voice that calls out to Sersi’s boyfriend, Dane Whitman.

Kit Harington plays the milquetoast human who is romantically involved with Sersi. While he doesn’t have a huge level of significance like the other characters, his ancestry is a point of contention and he hints to Sersi that he’s stumbled upon a strange family heirloom.

That artefact features in the post-credits scene, sealed in a wooden case with the family’s crest on it. Staring at the sword, it seems to drip with a dark liquid that draws upwards to Dane’s outstretched hand. “I’m sorry, I have to try,” says Dane as he moves to wield the Ebony Blade.

“Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” interjects a voice from elsewhere, stopping Dane in his tracks. If you left the cinema scratching your head, musing that you have heard that voice somewhere before, then let me bring an end to your perturbation. It’s Blade — more specifically, Mahershala Ali as Blade.

Director Chloe Zhao confirmed this in a chat with Fandom, and she’s over the moon that Blade is back. “That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!” she enthused. “You just have to wait for it. I don’t know what they’re doing with the movie, but Mahershala is is a treasure. It’s going to be epic.” I certainly didn’t expect that.
