Marvel's Avengers U-Turns On Pay-To-Win Mechanics Following Fan Backlash

Marvel's Avengers U-Turns On Pay-To-Win Mechanics Following Fan Backlash

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have had to strap a new consumable that levelled heroes faster

Marvel’s Avengers has had a rocky existence so far. The game was released back in 2020 saw all sorts of criticism from the character models, to the PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man expansion, to just how buggy it was. Crystal Dynamics has worked hard to keep the game rolling though and now it has a community that loves playing as the cast of Marvel’s top heroes. However, though its community has found some stability, Crystal Dynamics has seriously upset a portion of them with pay-to-win items.

Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors were added as a way to help get through the grind of the game’s levelling. Though these do not look like pay-to-win mechanics on the surface, fans of the game have been accusing the developers of slowing down natural levelling to try and push players into buying the consumables.

The Twitter post addressing the issues says: “We have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase.”

The image attached has a statement for fans of the games. It says: “We apologize for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace. We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly.

“After considering your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. They will continue to be earnable rewards and those already owned are still usable.

“We hope that this can be the first step in rebuilding your confidence in us as a team. It continues to be our goal to make the very best game possible. Thank you for being a part of the Marvel’s Avengers community.”

Fans have been widely pleased with this change, however, some aren’t praising the team for the change. NocturneJMC on Twitter responds saying: “You did this after deliberately shrinking the rewards capabilities and increasing the getting in the game. You don’t get to play the good guy and claim you didn’t know what you were doing.”

AskrSMNBrandon also responds, saying: “ Allowing you to gain resources of any kind faster via micro-transactions is pay to win. It doesn't have to be a gigantic overwhelming advantage. Any advantage is P2W.”

Others seem more forgiving, thinking that the option was completely up to the player. Levelling at your own pace was still possible even if the consumables were there, though now with their removal everyone will have to grind the game as usual.
