When you think of peak superhero video games, I’d imagine Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man springs to mind. Let’s face it, virtually swinging through the streets of New York City is the closest most of us are going to get to feeling even an ounce like a superhero.
Last year, Insomniac sent us Marvel fans into a frenzy when they announced both Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the vastly more shocking Marvel’s Wolverine. As euphoric as that announcement was, the truth is that the release of both games would likely be years away and whilst that remains to be true, production on Marvel’s Wolverine has hit an important milestone.

Mike Yosh, a lead animator on Marvel’s Wolverine, recently posted a photo to Twitter of an empty motion capture studio with the caption, “So peaceful and quiet. It will not be like this for long,” essentially confirming that mo-cap work on the game will begin imminently. Further to that, it seems that Marvel’s Wolverine must have a partially finished script, so the game’s development could be further along than we thought.
In terms of gameplay, little is known about what Marvel’s Wolverine might look like but based on Insomniac’s previous Marvel entries, we’d expect it to be a single-player adventure, potentially set within the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Director Brian Horton did previously divulge that the game would be “full-sized” with a “mature tone” which suits what we all know of Wolverine as a character.

The game will be a PlayStation exclusive and is also set to be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive so PlayStation 4 owners, you’ve been warned. The game will follow the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is currently scheduled for 2023 so we certainly still have some time to go. For now though, relish in the fact that somewhere in a mo-cap studio, a likely masterpiece is being made.
