Max Payne remakes are a 'big, big project', developer confirms

First announced back in April 2022, the upcoming Max Payne remakes are a “big, big project” according to Remedy’s creative director.

Remedy creative director Sam Lake has recently shed more light on the remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2. First released in 2001 and 2003 respectively, the third-person shooter went on to define the entire genre. After Rockstar took over Remedy and subsequently the Max Payne franchise, it went on to release Max Payne 3 which Remedy founder Scott Miller revealed “was nothing like the direction” it had planned for the third instalment.

Despite no longer being in charge of the future of Max Payne, Remedy is currently developing the upcoming remakes. However, Lake revealed the project is a large one with a lot of work involved. “It is a significant undertaking in the sense that even if they are old games, just thinking about bringing them up to modern standards and combining them into one, you can see that it’s a big, big project,” he explained during an interview with VGC.

With the project proving a significant undertaking, it may be some time until we get to experience the Max Payne series for next-gen. We do know that the games will be sold together as a single package and will be heading to the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. Additionally, the games will use Remedy’s Northlight game engine which is responsible for Quantum Break and Control.

Despite being released over twenty years ago, Max Payne still holds up brilliantly according to fans and is highly praised for being the first game to incorporate “bullet time”, a feature that can slow down time when shooting. Since then it has gone on to be included in many other first and third person shooters.

As for Rockstar, it has yet to announce a possible Max Payne 4. However, founder Sam Houser is “thrilled” to be working with Remedy on the upcoming remake. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”
