Look, even though it’s 2022 and we’re all in agreement that console wars really should be a thing of the past, when two rival companies release their new-gen consoles within days of each other, people are always going to compare how the two are doing.
Obviously, both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S have faced some difficulties with their sales - even though literally everyone wants to get their hands on them, the global semiconductor shortage has meant that neither Sony or Microsoft have been able to get the consoles out at the speed they’d like. Even with that issue though, they’ve both still been doing really well, but one seems to be doing quite a bit better than the other.

As reported by GamesRadar+, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed in a new earnings report that Series X/S officially outsold the PS5 in this year’s first full quarter: “Our ambition is to empower gamers to play when, and how, and where they want,” he said. “With our Xbox Series S and X consoles, we have taken share globally for two quarters in a row and we are the market leader this quarter among the next-gen consoles in the United States, Canada, UK, and Western Europe.”

It’s not really surprising at all that Xbox is doing so well - last month, Metacritic revealed in their Annual Game Publisher Rankings that Microsoft published the best games of 2021, with the average score of all their new releases coming in at an unprecedented 87.4, thanks to the likes of Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2.
Despite that though, it’s still quite a step up for the console sales compared to last year. In February, the research director for Ampere claimed that the PS5 sold almost double the units that the Xbox Series X/S did in 2021. It remains to be seen how the introduction of the new PS+ service in June could influence all this, but judging by most people’s kind of 'meh' reactions to that, it probably isn’t going to be a game-changer.
