'Minecraft' Launcher Updated To Include YouTuber Who Recently Died

Long live Technoblade.

Mojang, the studio behind and developer of Minecraft, recently updated the launcher for the game to include a touching tribute to a YouTuber who passed away recently.

Technoblade was a content creator famous within the Minecraft community, who sadly died aged just 23 after a battle with stage four cancer. The announcement was made on his YouTube channel by his father, and the loss has sent shockwaves through the gaming community.

When opening the game, players are greeted with the launch screen which now shows Technoblade’s in-game avatar - a pig wearing a crown. The small gesture has not gone unnoticed, and fans have been exclaiming their praise for Mojang.

Technoblade, who’s real name was Alex, told his 10 million followers (now nearly 13 million) on YouTube that he had the disease, and would be undergoing chemotherapy treatment in August 2021. After a few updates and then a three month break in uploading, a final video was uploaded simply titled ‘so long nerds’ which featured Alex’s dad on camera, explaining that he had passed away. He wrote a final message to fans just eight hours before he died, which Alex’s father read. That video has now been viewed almost 50 million times in just two days.

"Thank you all for supporting my content over the years,” Alex’s father said, reading words from the YouTuber. “If I had another hundred lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again every single time, as those were the happiest years of my life."

Technoblade helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer charities by selling merch, and even stated in his farewell video that he had set enough aside for his siblings to go to college if they so wished.

Including him this way is a fitting tribute to a YouTuber who touched so many lives with his content, and a wonderful way for fans to remember him every time they log into the game that he, and they, loved so much.
