Minecraft Player Has Been Mining Entire World For Four Years, And He's Nearly Finished

I've never been this committed to anything.

Minthical, a Minecraft YouTuber and streamer with over 24,000 subscribers, set themselves a challenge in December 2017. They would mine every single block in a Classic World. On Survival mode. Why? To "build [their] legacy."

"Many people may think doing these big projects will be a waste of time, but they don't understand that once they finish they will remembered by others through the accomplishments," explained Minthical in a video on their motivation to mine every single block. Most would write a book, or start a business, or take up a new craft to leave their mark on the world. I suppose this is an valid pursuit, too, and the effort involved must be monumental. Quick - where are your house keys?

Here's what Ocarina of Time would look like if it was made by Mojang rather than Nintendo!

Exactly. Lots of us simply do not have the mental fortitude to be so organised and consistent like Minthical. If I was going to take a stab at this, I think I'd start full of beans and optimism for my ultimate goal. About 20 minutes later, I might have wandered off, or began building a house, or got up for a cup of tea and then opened TikTok on my phone and stand next to the kettle for another 20 minutes.

The sheer scale of Minthical's challenge is worth explicating. It's a Classic World that they've been chipping away at for four years. Classic Worlds don't exist now so they're playing on the Legacy Console Edition of Minecraft on the PlayStation 4. With dimensions of 862x862 blocks, that leaves Minthical about 47 million blocks to mine. And you'll recall that they're playing on the Survival version of the game, which for the uninitiated, means that the pickaxes they're using constantly wear out so they need to constantly craft new ones. Approximately 5,500 pickaxes have fallen to mine approximately 38 million blocks as per this video uploaded on November 10th, 2021. Minthical streams on Sundays so it's very likely that these statistics have been surpassed in the month and a bit that has elapsed since then.

This is actually the first third of a "dimensional massacre" (their words, not mine) wherein the bedrock will be "massacred" then the Nether, and then the End. It's imagined that this will be done in February next year, so Minthical, I think the funniest thing you could do is mine to the very last block and then leave it.
