'Mortal Kombat' 2021 Sequel Is Already In The Works

'Mortal Kombat' 2021 Sequel Is Already In The Works

A sequel film to the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat is already in the works by Warner Bros.

Despite a very 'meh' response from critics, a sequel to last year's Mortal Kombat movie is already in the works. The third film based on the long-running Mortal Kombat series of games, with a 6.1 rating on IMDB, still beats out the critical response to the first two films which hold scores of 5.8 and 3.7 respectively.

Writing the new script is Jeremy Slater, a relatively fresh face on the scene. His credits begin in 2015 co-writing supernatural horror The Lazarus Effect, and has since worked on a number of TV shows for streaming services. Most notably he is the head writer for Moon Knight - an upcoming superhero series for Disney+ where Oscar Isaac plays our titular hero.

Are you a huge Mortal Kombat fan? Then see if you can guess the fatalities the actors from the 2021 film are trying to copy without any of the CGI.

Though no-one was particularly raving about the Mortal Kombat reboot it still did fairly well at the box office. Releasing in April 2021 simultaneously in the cinema and on HBO Max, popularity seems to have been bolstered by boredom during the pandemic. While profits weren't spectacular, the film does seem to have almost doubled its $55million investment. This lead to Warner Brothers claiming the franchise is one of its top assets.

The reboot was produced in response to the popularity of the eleventh entry in the gory fighting series. The game was the fifth best selling game of 2019, selling 12million copies and even outsold the long awaited Kingdom Hearts III. It also scooped up a plethora of nominations and awards, including the Best Fighting Game award at the prestigious The Game Awards 2020.

Following the announcement that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was working on another film based on a video game franchise speculation among fans went wild. While he's remaining tight lipped on the subject, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon, fanned the flames by tweeting that The Rock would "make a great Shao Khan" the series antagonist.

Not much is known about the sequel at the present but seeing The Rock performing fatalities would be pretty dope.
