Whoever it is that plays the next James Bond, it will definitely be a British man, said producer Barbara Broccoli in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

At the start of her career, Broccoli was an intern for this same outlet. By the late 1970s, she had secured a role working in the publicity department of The Spy Who Loved Me, and subsequently shifted to become an assistant director on Octopussy, then on The Living Daylights. It was then in 1995 that Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson were given ownership of Eon Productions by their father Cubby Broccoli. Since that point, she and Wilson have driven forwards the evolution of James Bond, also known as Agent 007, the super-spy who everyone wants to be and be with.

Given the sheer star power of the character, it would be tempting to explore the history with spinoffs for the silver and the small screen. Especially today where continuous universes are all the rage. “Sure, there are other main characters like M and Q and all that,” explained Broccoli. “But we haven’t really wanted to make a Bond film without Bond. It would be like making Hamlet without Hamlet.”

No Time To Die is Daniel Craig's last outing as James Bond and naturally the question that's circling the series like vultures is who will step up to the plate and portray one of the most iconic characters in British cinema. Regé-Jean Page, who you'll recognise from Netflix's Bridgerton, is a favourite alongside contenders like Richard Madden, Idris Elba, Sam Heughan and other dudes who've proven they look good in black tie. Even Harry Styles is a name that's been bandied about in the quest for a Bond. Broccoli does have her opinions on the new devastatingly handsome and slightly sociopathic super-spy on the block, though.

“I think it will be a man because I don’t think a woman should play James Bond,” she said. “I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles. I don’t think there are enough great roles for women, and it’s very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race].”

Craig has echoed these statements himself. "There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour," argued the actor in an interview in September. "Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?"

However, that's as much as you'll get from the producer about the future of Bond. “I want to let this film play and really celebrate Daniel’s incredible achievement that he has done over 16 years,” said Broccoli. “People always ask, ‘Oh, who’s the next James Bond?’ It’s like asking a bride as she’s going up to the altar who’s her next husband going to be. I don’t really want to think about who is going to be the next person until I absolutely have to.”
