A few short days ago, we saw the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru in cinemas, and while you wouldn’t imagine that Illumination’s kid-friendly comedy would be a particularly exciting release to anyone beyond its target audience of, y’know, families, if TikTok is anything to go by, it seems that the main cinemagoers have been none other than groups of teens in formal attire. Because reasons.
The “Gentleminion” trend has been well and truly taking over online - how it began, I honestly have no idea, but it’s showing absolutely no signs of stopping. Continuing the chaos, as reported by We Got This Covered, is popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast), who decided to buy out an entire cinema screening to watch the movie with his friends, all donning shirts and ties.

His video of the shenanigans has been going viral on TikTok: “Felt despicable so I bought out the theatre,” he wrote in the captions. As with any aspect of this trend, yes, it’s ridiculous, but it’s still pretty funny, in its own bizarre way.
Thankfully, it seems that everyone in MrBeast’s gang was well behaved, which you’d think ought to be a given, but some of the so-called Gentleminions have been doing quite the opposite. One UK cinema has even been forced to cancel all its screenings as a result of the disruption caused, with some teens shouting and throwing bananas at the screen.

“It’s been absolutely heart-breaking,” Daniel Phillips-Smith, the manager of the cinema said. “We’ve had families who won’t even go back into the screen when we’ve tried to sort it out, families leaving before the film has even started and of course the children have been in tears.”
It should go without saying, but if you were planning on suiting up to watch The Rise of Gru yourself, just don’t be one of those people, okay? Okay.
