Not content with its success in the world of TV and film, Netflix is pushing ahead with its plans to dominate the video game industry.

In September 2021, the streaming giant announced its purchase of Oxenfree studio Night School. While we've yet to see this particular collaboration bear fruit (video games take a long time to develop, after all), Netflix has now announced acquisition number two.

Next Games, the studio behind a number of popular mobile titles based on The Walking Dead and Stranger Things, is the latest addition to Netflix's budding gaming department.

Netflix has announced its intention to buy the Finnish developer's outstanding shares for €65 million (roughly £54 million). A number of mobile games are already available to play via Netflix's budding gaming service, so a studio like Next Games is clearly a smart fit.

Next Games is responsible for The Walking Dead: No Man's Land, a mobile RPG based on the TV series, and Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales, a Candy Crush-style puzzle aimed at a more casual audience. Between Next Games and Night School, it's looking like Netflix is attempting to cater to every kind of gamer.

"Next Games has a seasoned management team, strong track record with mobile games based on entertainment franchises, and solid operational capabilities," Michael Verdu Vice President of Games at Netflix said in a press release.

"We are excited for Next Games to join Netflix as a core studio in a strategic region and key talent market, expanding our internal game studio capabilities. While we're just getting started in games, I am confident that together with Next Games we will be able to build a portfolio of world class games that will delight our members around the world."

Night School's Oxenfree II, which was announced earlier this year, will still release later this year for Nintendo Switch and other platforms as originally planned.
