Netflix's One Piece Live-Action Cast Is Absolutely Spot-On

Fans are very pleased with the news.

The cast for Netflix’s One Piece has been announced and fans are thrilled with the lineup for the upcoming adaptation.

A number of the actors who will be playing the Straw Hat Pirates have been revealed, including Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji. Creator Eiichiro Oda is over the moon with the news and assured people that he is extremely pleased with the picks for his characters. "We've been working with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios on the massive project that is the Hollywood live-action series adaptation of One Piece! How many years has it been since it was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured we've been making steady progress all along!" he said in a statement.

So, Iñaki Godoy is playing Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu is Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd is Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson is Usopp and Taz Skylar is Sanji. Godoy has starred in Go Youth! and Who Killed Sara?, whereas Mackenyu is known for his roles in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure — Diamond Is Unbreakable, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part I - The Final.

Netflix buffs will recognise Rudd from the Fear Street trilogy and she’s also played Daenerys Targaryen in the comedy short titled George R. R. Martin’s Blank Page. On the other hand, Gibson has appeared in The Resident, Grey’s Anatomy, and Greenleaf. Last but not least, Skylar has written and acted in his short films The Reserves and Multi-Facial, and has been seen in a number of plays on the West End.

“It’s not easy when you’re working with people from different cultures! But it’s precisely that process that can yield something special!” continued Oda. “Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they carry themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance amongst the Straw Hat Crew, etc…! We decided on this cast after numerous discussions involving people around the world! These are the people who will be our Straw Hat Pirates!”

There’s still a little longer to wait for the show to arrive on the streaming service and Oda joked that the excitement is so high for the show that the team are already planning to plug potential leaks from the sets. Showrunner Steven Maeda, who won a Writers Guild of America award for Lost with the rest of the writing team, is equally enthused to start production. “We have finally found the perfect fits! They have already begun working very hard to bring these characters to life,” he said. “You will come to know and love them just as much as their manga counterparts. All of us can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with! Onward to adventure!”
