'The Witcher' Season Two Trailer Debuts Horrifying New Monster

Geralt's got his work cut out.

This is not one for the insectophobes. A battle scene from the upcoming second season of The Witcher shows Geralt facing down a Myriapod, a creature whose fearsomeness has only been talked about in the games.

Giant centipedes featured in Blood and Wine for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, however, they’re like the annoying younger siblings of the Myriapod. It took only one of these bad boys to annihilate half of the city of Maribor in Temeria, as stated by the lore in the first game in the series, so Geralt has his work cut out for him when he encounters it in this snow-covered forest.

The Continent has such splendid locales and pleasantries for the player to stumble upon on their journey! Take Skellige, for instance, I hear it's lovely this time of year.

Granted, it’s a very short clip, but we see the creature scuttle towards our hero before swinging its scythe-like limbs to shred Geralt. Fortunately, the Witcher uses Quen to defend himself and slashes the monster with a golden glowing sword. The Myriapod’s strength is legendary for a reason, though, and it bats Geralt backwards like he’s a leaf in the wind.

Screeching, it turns its attention to someone or something else. My money is that Ciri is with Geralt in this scene as we have seen the two standing in similar-looking woods in the trailer and promotional images. As Geralt is in his new armor, I’m also going to guess that the two have reached Kaer Morhen and this outing might be a part of Ciri’s training.

So, it’s possible that they are ambushed by the monster while walking in the woods, or that they have been hearing reports of a creature attacking a nearby settlement. Whether or not Ciri will use her abilities to turn the tides against the Myriapod is unknown, of course.

“Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen,” reads the official description for the second season. “While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.” The Witcher's second season arrives on Netflix on December 17th.
