Netflix's The Witcher showrunner finally explains Henry Cavill departure

The dust refuses to settle when it comes to Henry Cavill’s departure from The Witcher. It’s something that I’d imagine everyone has heard about by now but if this is news to you, season three will mark Cavill’s last appearance as Geralt of Rivea in the Netflix series. Liam Hemsworth will then take over the role in season four.

Cavill hasn’t yet opened up about his decision but it’s assumed to be down to his dissatisfaction with the direction the show is heading in - diverting from the source novels. In fact, over 200,000 fans have signed a petition asking Netflix to fire the show’s writers to lure Cavill back. For the first time, The Witcher’s showrunner has now responded to the fan backlash.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich recently sat down with TechRadar and finally opened up about Cavill’s departure. “It's a big deal for us too,” Hissrich began. “And that's the thing – there's a lot of talk and rumours about, and we fully understand why fans are going there. What I will say is please come back for The Witcher season three so that we can continue to do this.”

In recent days, Hissrich has also touched on the addition of Liam Hemsworth to the show. She previously said, “I’m so excited for viewers. I think that it’s just a new chapter for us. And I think new chapters bring new energy and that people will find things to love. So yeah, personally, I’m really excited.”

Hissrich isn’t the only person who’s ready to open up. Jaskier actor Joey Batey said that he’d miss Cavill “more so than most because Henry and I are very good pals.” He also wanted fans to know though that Liam is “diving headfirst into this and [is] taking it so seriously with his research.” Whatever your thoughts are, we’ve got a whole season of Cavill left to enjoy.
