Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Showcase revealed a huge amount of news for the stealth and RPG franchise. From officially revealing Assassin’s Creed Mirage, to announcing the final story DLC for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there’s plenty for fans to be excited about. However, the real highlight of the show was Codename Red.

While the title is merely a project title for now, the main pull of this in-development RPG is it will finally bring the series to Feudal Japan, something fans have been begging for since forever ago.

Only one official asset has been released so far, in the form of a concept image showing a shinobi-esque assassin on a roof wielding what appears to be a katana or uchigatana, and it’s already got fans (myself included) excited for what Red could offer.
Described by Ubisoft as a “powerful shinobi fantasy,” Codename Red will be the next premium flagship title and the future of open-world Assassin’s Creed games. Essentially, this confirms that the more stealth-based Mirage won’t be setting a new blueprint for the franchise, which is good news for fans of Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.
After all this time, many felt that an Assassin’s Creed in Japan would always remain a fantasy. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and Aragami 2 went someway to filling the void, but as both of those titles are still very much their own, celebrated experiences, it’s exciting to see that Ubisoft are finally delivering on this dream scenario.

Sadly, there’s no release date for Codename Red at this time, which is hardly surprising given the game doesn’t even have an official name yet. For now, we play the waiting game.
