New Metal Gear Website Appears Online But Sadly There's Bad News

Fake? Fake? Faaaaake?

Fans may be surprised to learn that the first ever Metal Gear game came out to consumers in 1987. A sequel was made in 1990, before creator Hideo Kojima rebooted the series in 1998 as the title we all know and love, Metal Gear Solid.

That makes 2022 the 35th anniversary of the tactical stealth series featuring our boy with the beautiful booty, Snake. Despite how successful the series has been for them, fans weren’t expecting Konami to sing Metal Gear’s praises. The company famously had a spat with Kojima after the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which led to him not appearing at his mate Geoff Keighley’s yearly soirée, The Game Awards in 2015. Kojima’s title won Best Action Game at the event.

If you want to know everything about the rumoured Metal Gear Solid remake then look no further than the video below.

So it came as a bit of a surprise when people noticed a website which popped up seemingly celebrating Metal Gear’s big anniversary. The website says all the right things. It has copyright Konami 2022 at the bottom, and links to various Konami webpages you would expect to see. The logo looks pretty good also, made up of the alert exclamation mark the series is famous for. It looks slick and sites like this usually pop up around game anniversaries prior to some big announcement.

However, as spotted by GameSpew it seems unlikely that the site is real. Firstly, there is the obvious that the site appeared on 1 April, a day well known for japes. Secondly, when looking at the site’s data there are more than a few fishy details. The anniversary website was registered only a few days ago on 30 March. It is also registered to an address in California when Konami is a Japanese company.

While this doesn’t mean the website is a prank it is certainly suspicious. I won’t be lighting the candles on my Raiden shrine ready for his return just yet.
