New PlayStation console expected to release in a few months, claims insider

Prominent industry insider Tom Henderson claims that a new PS5 model could be releasing in September.

Finally managed to get your hands on Sony’s latest console? Well, too bad, because it looks like another one could be upon us within a matter of months.

The PS5 is a fantastic console, but anyone who attempted to buy one before this year will know what a nightmare it was to actually source at a normal retail price. Thanks to a global semiconductor chip shortage and scalpers sweeping up a huge proportion of stock, it was basically impossible to grab a new-gen Sony console unless you set up every stock alert possible and were constantly ready to strike should any store get a new shipment of them.

The PS VR2 released exclusively for PS5 owners earlier this year, but is it worth it? Take a look at our review below.

Thankfully, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan announced back in January that: “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” Great! But anyone who’s picked one up in the months since might be slightly annoyed at the news to follow.

According to prominent industry insider Tom Henderson (via Insider Gaming), a new PS5 console is apparently going to release later this year. In fact, he expects that it’ll release in September, which is incredibly soon to say that there’s not been an official announcement yet.

So, what is the new console? Henderson alleges that not that much will be different from the existing PS5, but this one will reportedly boast a detachable disc drive. We all know that the current PS5 model is a chunky boi, so this would certainly slim things down a bit. Reportedly, this model will phase out the old one within a year.

While the idea of a detachable disc drive that plugs in via USB might be tantalising for those who currently own the Digital Edition PS5 console, don’t get too excited. Previously, Henderson claimed that the hardware won’t be compatible with the existing model, which is definitely going to cause some upset if true.

As of now, Sony hasn’t confirmed the existence of this supposed new PS5 console, so take this with a pinch of salt. However, if it’s true, you’d imagine that we’ll be getting an announcement sometime soon, so watch this space.
