Nicolas Cage has officially been cast as Superman in an upcoming movie.

In the late 90s to early 2000s, we were supposed to get a Superman movie directed by Tim Burton. This may seem like an odd combination, however, let’s not forget that Burton directed the fantastic Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). So it’s not like Warner Bros., DC and Burton hadn't already had a connection prior to the long-cancelled Superman project.

What’s more, this cancelled Superman movie was set to star Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. Sadly, the reason this movie was cancelled was due to Warner Bros’ concerns over the quality of the script as well as the budget.

At the time, WB wasn't exactly pumping out superhero classics following the post-Keaton Batman era. Since that time, fans have long wondered what a Tim Burton Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage would have been like. No doubt it would have been weird, but hopefully wonderful. I guess we’ll never know.

Before we proceed, please be advised that there will be spoilers for an upcoming movie. So if you want to keep Nicolas Cage’s cameo a surprise, do not read on.

As reported by Digital Trends, Nicolas Cage will finally get to don the red cape as he’s set to have a cameo in the upcoming The Flash, directed by Andy Mushietti who broke the news during an interview with Esquire Middle East.

“Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it,” said Mushietti. “I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon.” The director continued: “He [Cage] is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic.”

To be honest, while I’m totally down for the great Nicolas Cage to have a cameo as Superman in The Flash, it’s a shame that a decision wasn't made to keep this news a surprise, rather than giving fans an unexpected treat at the cinema.

In other Nicolas Cage news, it was recently announced that the great man will be a playable character in the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, Dead by Daylight.

The Flash will release in cinemas worldwide on 16 June 2023.
