Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is, as the name suggests, very much the ultimate iteration of the Smash Bros series. Nintendo's latest mascot brawler is a love letter to gaming, a comprehensive history of the medium featuring stages and characters that incorporate everything from Super Mario Bros. and Pac-Man to Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.
Not content with launching the game with an incredible 74 unique fighters though, Nintendo has spent the last year and a bit releasing a steady drip feed of DLC characters. As part of the game's first Fighters Pass, we've had Joker (Persona 5), Hero (Dragon Quest), Banjo & Kazooie (you know), and Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury).
An impressive and wide-ranging selection of characters, no doubt. However, there's still one more fighter to be revealed as part of the Fighters Pass. Rumours have suggested it could be anyone from Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher series to Halo's Master Chief, and the diversity of the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster certainly shows us we can't rule anyone out.
So how about Dante from the Devil May Cry series? According to a new report, that's exactly who we're getting. This comes from Brian Hanford himself, who voiced newcomer V in Devil May Cry 5. Appearing on an AMA podcast from YouTube channel JoJo Wifi, the actor seemed to let slip that Dante would be joining the Nintendo brawler soon, presumably as part of Fighters Pass.
While discussing his love of the Smash Bros. series, Hanford expressed his disappointment that we'd be unlikely to see V as a character in the franchise anytime soon. He reasoned that V is too new to Devil May Cry lore, and that Dante would be a far more likely contender.
"To be part of Marvel Vs Capcom, or Super Smash Bros., or both - which is what Dante is gonna be - it's just like, come on," he said
Whether Hanford revealed something that he shouldn't have, or simply genuinely misspoke isn't entirely clear. It could be that he misunderstood the interviewer and was speculating on what he thinks will happen, rather than what he knows. It could certainly be taken as a hint Dante is destined for Smash Bros. Ultimate, though. You can hear the full interview with the actor below.
Hanford's comment is especially interesting, because there have been rumblings of Dante coming to Smash for quite a while now. Back in February last year, Devil May Cry V director Hideaki Itsuno said that a game in the Devil May Cry series would need to be playable on a Nintendo system before Dante could come to Smash.
Sure enough, just a few months later, it was announced that the original Devil May Cry would be released for Nintendo Switch. Even more intriguing is the fact that a port of Devil May Cry 3 is bound for Switch in February, the same month the fifth and final DLC fighter is expected to be made available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Matt Walker, the producer of the Devil May Cry 3 Switch port, recently told fans to mark January 16th, January 30th, and February 13th on their calendars for some Devil May Cry-related news. Could this possibly involve the announcement and inclusion of Dante in Smash? We'll have to wait and see, but I wouldn't bet against it.
Update: yes indeed, we're going to learn who the next fighter is via an in-depth Direct on January 16th, courtesy of Smash director Masahiro Sakurai. Will it be Dante, though? Are his three raised fingers indicative of a link to DMC3? Time, it ticks away, and will tell us all.
