It's a surprising method.

This modder has cobbled together a way to burn digital games from the Nintendo Wii U onto a DVD, and we're very impressed.

Released in 2012 and to be the successor to the hugely lucrative Nintendo Wii, the Wii U was... not as good as its forebear, not at the start of its life. Its launch sales statistics were not as positive as the company would have liked, clocking in at 3.5 million units in the fiscal year 2013, and others took notice. Electronic Arts said that its titles in development for the Wii U were not as numerous as the ones for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and even though Ubisoft was a "big supporter" of the console, it had no intentions of making any more exclusives for the Wii U until sales of the console recovered.

Nintendo's roster of consoles over the last thirty years have transformed the industry, and how we play. Check out our video on the Game Boy below.

However, the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD turned things round and sales of the console surged by 200% in the month preceding the game's launch. Now, we've got the benefit of hindsight and acknowledge that there are some absolute crackers on the Wii U, and the YouTube channel Will It Work? has lifted its digital games and burned them onto a DVD.

One of the major issues with the Wii U is that it has not got a lot of storage - 8 GB on the original model and 32 GB on the Premium model. Users needed an external hard drive to ensure that all of the games they liked to play were accessible, but this novel method will guarantee that you hold onto your digital games outside of the console. In order to do this, Will It Work? explains that it's DVD-RAM discs that are compatible with transferring games from the Wii U, so find yourself a pack of those before beginning.

Then, link an optical drive to the Wii U with its USB port. Go on the settings for the Wii U and select "Data Management." Insert the DVD-RAM disc to the drive and select "Format USB Storage Device." Once it's done, it will say "Formatting complete," and then you'll be able to select "Copy/Move/Delete Data" and see the DVD disc as an option to move eShop games onto it. The game that is put onto the disc (in this case, it's Shakedown Hawaii) is then playable. Voila.
