A New Left 4 Dead Game Is Finally Coming, Insider Claims

It would appear that Valve is gradually getting over its irrational fear of developing new games for old IPs. Just last month, the company shocked everyone by announcing Half-Life: Alyx; a flagship VR title, and the first new entry in the Half-Life series in well over a decade.
Half-Life: Alyx is the first of three promised dedicated VR games from Valve. We don't know for certain what the other two are just yet, but we all have our suspicions. I mean, surely it's time for Portal and Left 4 Dead to make their own comebacks, right?
The good news is that a fresh report doing the rounds suggests that Left 4 Dead will indeed be the next beloved franchise to get the virtual reality treatment. The last proper entry in the co-op undead slaying series (discounting spin-offs, crossovers and arcade games) came out way back in 2009. Not quite as long ago as the last Half-Life, but we can all agree that it's just as overdue for a return.

This new report comes via Tyler McVicker, creator of the Valve News Network. McVicker, who previously correctly predicted that Half-Life: Alyx would be a VR prequel, now claims to have heard from sources that "Left 4 Dead VR is real". He also suggests that The Game Awards, which is held in Los Angeles this Thursday (December 12th, so early on December 13th in Europe) will feature some more news on Half-Life: Alyx.
McVicker offers no further details beyond the vague acknowledgment that a Left 4 Dead VR game exists, so do take this with a pinch of salt for now. Of course, it is worth noting that McVicker's track record of reporting on Valve rumours is pretty solid.
It would also make a lot of sense for the studio to follow up the reveal of a Half-Life VR game with a second VR title based on another cherished and long-dormant IP. I would have guessed Portal would be next, but that could well be the third mystery VR title.
At the end of the day, the idea behind these games is to shift VR headsets and push virtual reality further than ever before. There's no better way to do that than by giving the people what they've been asking for for literal years now. More Portal. More Half-Life. More Left 4 Dead.
Gabe Newell himself said recently that developing VR titles has been an incredibly re-energising experience for the studio. Doubtless, it's offered an opportunity for the team to come at these old franchises from a new perspective.
"We've invested a lot of ourselves in the technology," Newell said in a press release. "But we're also game developers at heart, and to be devoting ourselves to a VR game this ambitious is just as exciting. For that to come in the form of Half-Life feels like the culmination of a lot things we care a lot about: truly great games, cutting edge technology, and open platforms."
I wouldn't expect official confirmation of Left 4 Dead VR anytime soon. Valve is an incredibly tight-lipped company, and it'll no doubt want to focus on Half-Life: Alyx for the time being.
