Who needs The Elder Scrolls?

Avowed is one game we're definitely going to have to keep our eye on in the coming months. Announced during the Xbox Series X event last week, it's a fantasy RPG from Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian that looks to have been heavily inspired by Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise.

As it turns out. Avowed might just be the game we've been waiting for since Skyrim. While the brief reveal trailer didn't give much of anything away, a recent leak has revealed a slew of new details that really paint the action-RPG as a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls V. Given that we're clearly not getting The Elder Scrolls VI anytime soon, this is an exciting prospect.

According to Resetera user Sponger, Avowed is an open-world RPG. This much we kind of got from the reveal trailer. However, the user goes on to claim that the game's world is quite a bit larger (and denser) than Skyrim. There are apparently two major cities to explore, and an open world made up of different biomes and landmarks.

There's also talk of a real-time weather system, as well as a "big focus on world-reactivity, lighting and next-gen AI systems". In short, it sounds as if the world of Avowed will be more reactive and interactive, thanks in part to seemingly ambitious in-game physics that work through "magic systems".

The leaker isn't entirely sure what this means, but I'm imagining something inspired by The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, in that the game is bound by all these rules that you can play around with. In Breath Of The Wild, for example, you could light fires and create an updraft to soar into the sky. You get the idea.

Companions will also feature on the adventure, as well as a "very advanced character creation tool". The leaker also claims there's a "very large number of fractions", but I'm going to assume they meant "factions". These groups will be very different from the ones we saw in Skyrim, apparently.

Finally, you'll be glad to know that Obsidian is aiming to make it so that you can kill every character in the game, if you want. This includes major NPCs and quest givers, which is something you don't really see in modern RPGs. Sponger does note that while the game is in full production and expected to launch in late 2022/early 2023, a lot of what they learned could change during development.
