'Borderlands 3' Is Free To Play Right Now, So Get Stuck In

Borderlands 3 has gone free-to-play on PC for a brief period, providing the perfect opportunity for those of you who've yet to check out the latest instalment of the anarchic loot-shooter. Publisher 2K announced just before the weekend that the FPS would be free to check out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

Unfortunately the free weekend ended on consoles last night. The good news is that if if you've got a PC, you can still head on over to Steam and give the game a whirl. You've got until August 12th at 6pm BST, so do get stuck in. Or don't. I'm really not here to tell you how to live your life.

2K confirmed in a blog post that the free trial will give you access to the entire game, so you're not missing out on any content: "You can enjoy everything that the Borderlands 3 base game has to offer," the publisher wrote. "Power up your chosen Vault Hunter with killer weapons and superhuman abilities as you shoot and loot across multiple planets in pursuit of the diabolical Calypso Twins."

If you should choose to make Borderlands 3 your own after the free-to-play trial comes to an end later this week, all of your save data will carry over. That means all the hard-earned progress and sweet, sweet loot you make during the trial will be yours to keep, if you shell out for the full game. Incidentally, Borderlands 3 is currently on sale on Steam, so you can grab it for £25. Not a bad deal.

Borderlands 3 came out late last year, and was met with a fairly positive critical reception. While the game doesn't do very much to change up the formula established in the original Borderlands, it turns up all of the series' familiar elements to 11, offering the most extreme incarnation of the loot-shooter yet. While this works in some areas, such as more weapons and loot than ever before, Borderlands 3 can occasionally try a little too hard with some of its writing. A good number of jokes feel like they were written by 15-year-old 4Chan user.

Still, if you can look past its flaws, there's plenty of fun to be had with Borderlands 3 - at least for a bit. With a free trial on offer, you really don't have anything at all to lose by checking it out, do you?
