'Breaking Bad' Crosses Over With Horror Game As Walter White Ghost Appears

He's still the danger.

Like Among Us and Fall Guys before it, multiplayer horror game Phasmophobia has proven itself one of the most unexpected hits of 2020. The indie ghost hunting sim has absolutely blown up on Steam and Twitch in the last few months, and with Halloween right around the corner, it's showing no signs of slowing down.

To celebrate October 31st, Phasmophobia developer Kinetic Games has released the game's third major post-launch update. While the vast majority of the update deals with fixing bugs and tweaking balance to ensure a smoother experience overall, the team has also teased some new content that appears to include a reference to Breaking Bad.

Of all the crossovers Phasmophobia could have gone for, I have to say that the TV show about a chemistry teacher and his ex student creating a drug empire on the back of their crystal meth business didn't present itself as the most obvious choice. Regardless, Kinetic teased on Twitter that one of the new ghosts that shows up in the game could be named after - or inspired by - "the one who knocks".

Even if you never actually watched Breaking Bad, I'd wager you'll immediately recognise that line. It's one that has embedded itself firmly into our pop culture consciousness ever since Bryan Cranston's Walter White uttered it to an awestruck audience of viewers years ago.

As cool as this is, I wouldn't get too excited about it being a crossover in any official capacity. It's not too likely that AMC and Kinetic have worked together to bring the ghost of Walter White as we know him to the game. I'd imagine that what we'll get is a ghost simply named after the iconic character. Kinetic's tweet implies that at most, the spectral figure could be styled after Walt's Heisenberg alter-ego, with the shades and hat... but we'll have to wait and see.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've just reminded myself how great Breaking Bad is and I need to go and watch the whole thing through for the fifth time.
