Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare has hit quite the milestone, and I'm not talking about units sold. Activision and Infinity Ward's hugely popular first-person shooter is now, according to our own estimations, the largest game on PC by some distance. At present, Modern Warfare takes up an eye-watering 227 GB of space for PC users. That's one big chungus.

For comparison, massive open-world games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim all clock in at somewhere between 100-150GB each. That's still not even close to the monstrous demands of the latest Call Of Duty, which has only grown in size with every update, like some kind of unstoppable black hole that devours everything in its path.

The PC version of the game has long been victim to the largest updates and install sizes. The most recent Season 5 patch clocked in at 36GB on PlayStation 4, 49.8GB on Xbox One, and an incredible 54.2GB/47.4GB on PC, depending on whether you own Modern Warfare or just the free-to-play battle royale Warzone. Understandably, there are a lot of fans out there who aren't exactly thrilled about this.

"I uninstalled because it was getting too big around 100gb," one user wrote on a Reddit thread detailing the PC version's latest size.

"[Master Chief Collection] has four games and it's, like 82gb," another pointed out. "Even on Xbox with all 6 games, it's hardly over 150gb. And that's including all the updates."

The rest of the thread is filled with similar sentiments. PC gamers seem to either have already deleted the game, or are now seriously considering doing so. Anticipating some of the more... colourful fan feedback that Modern Warfare's ever-growing size might recieve, Infinity Ward production director Paul Haile did confirm that the most recent update would go some way towards reducing the overall size of the game... at least on consoles.

"The download will be big, but the overall size of the game will actually shrink on your consoles after you download the patch, even though we're adding a bunch of new content for the season," Haile explained on Twitter. "It's a priority for us to keep working on reducing the overall size of MW & WZ on your hard drives, but at the same time also delivering new seasons for everyone to enjoy. we'll continue to work on this and keep pushing space reductions out with future updates."

While this is clearly far from an ideal situation for PC gamers who want to continue playing Modern Warfare, the good news is that there are some unofficial solutions. Reddit user delta_p_delta_ put together a seriously handy guide that talks PC users through compressing their Modern Warfare folder with a "minimal increase in processing time when opening." If you're sick of the way things are going but want to continue playing, you'd do well to check that out.
