‘Civilization 6’ Bug Will Crash The Game Unless You Declare War

‘Civilization 6’ Bug Will Crash The Game Unless You Declare War

Death to pacifists

A strange bug has cropped up in the Nintendo Switch version of Civilization VI, a bug that strikes at the worst possible time. Currently, if you're about to achieve a cultural, scientific, diplomatic, or religious victory - essentially anything other than a violent one - then on the final turn your game will crash. Clearly, this bug hates pacifists.

Word of the bug spread through Reddit (spotted by Nintendo Life), where players shared stories of the crash, realising it was affecting every kind of victory except military domination. In fact, this is the solution that Firaxis has given players until the bug is solved.

"A discovered known workaround is to declare war on the Civilization that is causing the crash right before you end your turn," a Firaxis rep told user Throwaway489er. "This seems to alleviate the crashing in most instances. In order for you to know which Civilization is causing the crash, you'll have to pay attention to which Civ's turn it falls onto immediately before the crash happens. Once discovered, reload the save, declare war on that Civ and hit 'Next Turn'. I hope this workaround helped out."

According to one poster, if you don't solve the crash and instead keep loading the game then you can end up breaking the win condition entirely. "After loading up my game a few more times it seems to have gotten past triggering the win," redditor bribios writes. "Culture counter keeps climbing past victory amount."

The players in the thread believe this bug only appeared in the latest patch of the game, as they'd been able to achieve non-violent victories before. So, hopefully, it's a swift fix and one that will be rolling out for players soon.

It seems on brand that pacifist players have to resort to declaring war to win, as Civilization famously had an exceptionally war-hungry Gandhi. While you'd expect the Indian leader to be a pacifist, a bug led to him becoming the most aggressive AI in the game. It came about because the character had an aggression rating of the lowest possible score - just 1 out of a score of 256 - and when he adopted democracy his score would be reduced by two, a stat change that happens for all AI leaders. That subtraction looped back around on the aggression range, giving him the ultra high score of 255.

In tribute to that bug, later games were coded to make Gandhi aggressive, but that first time was a simple mistake.
