While squads of three and four drop into Verdansk to duke it out in Call Of Duty: Warzone, developer Infinity Ward fights an entirely different kind of war out here in the real world. Specifically, the endless, bitter war against PC cheaters.
It's no secret that Warzone has been having a real problem with cheaters since launching back on March 10th. As a free-to-play game, there's a lot less risk involved for those who seek to play deviously. After all, getting banned for life from a game you didn't actually pay any money for is hardly the end of the world. So it is that Infinity Ward has now tracked down and banned well over 70,000 cheaters at this point.
Despite the massive ban spree, the problem hasn't gotten much better. Warzone has had such a problem with cheating on PC specifically, that gamers on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have elected to turn off the crossplay feature so that they don't run into cheaters.

This is not to say that every PC user is a cheater... but PC is the platform you'll find most cheaters, as enabling any cheat-type features on a console is way harder to pull off and much easier to detect.
It's not all doom and gloom though. Infinity Ward has now introduced a tough new measure that should strike right at the heart of PC cheating. The developer has now enabled two-step SMS authentication for Warzone PC users who log-in as free-to-play.
For those who might not be aware, this simply provides an extra layer of security and should - in theory - make it harder for cheaters to do their thing. This is kind of like that moment where Luke blew up the Death Star in Star Wars, but way less exciting. Just as satisfying, though.
Of course, it's a little too soon to tell for sure how effective these new measures will be. If you'll allow me to continue with my Star Wars analogy, PC cheaters could always build another Death Star. Hopefully, though, we start to see a significant decrease in cheaters. I'd very much like to play with my friends on PC again without being shot through walls.
