The Epic Games Store is finally starting to give Steam a run for its money. Epic has revealed that its relatively nascent digital storefront now boasts close to 61 million monthly active users on PC. It recently hit an average concurrent peak of It hit of 13 million.
As you might well expect, much of this success comes down to Epic's weekly free games giveaway. Most notably, the Vault campaign, which featured some massive giveaways that recieved a ton of promotion. Grand Theft Auto V, Ark: Survival Evolved, Civilization 6, and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection were among the freebies of the last few weeks.
Oh, and Fortnite on PC is accessed via the Epic Games Store. I understand the free-to-play battle royale is still something of a massive deal.
Epic's 61 million monthly active users isn't quite comparable to Steam's 100 million. With that said, it seems like Epic is making moves to catch up with its rival storefront. Epic's 13 million peak isn't too shabby, even when compared to Steam's 24.5 million - especially when we consider Steam has been around for a lot longer and is way more established. Epic has only been around since 2018, don't forget.

"The results have exceeded our expectations," said Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison. "In 2020, we've been growing at a historic rate. Epic Games Store partners have a huge audience of players to sell their games to, and receive 88% of the revenue, instead of only 70% as on other platforms."
Epic's growing audience and approach to revenue only continues to attract more developers and publishers. The company has been incredibly aggressive in securing a number of exclusives over the past year or so, including Metro: Exodus, The Division 2, and The Outer Worlds.
"Generally I think I would prefer not to do exclusives," Rebellion's Jason Kingsley said last year after signing a deal with Epic for Zombie Army 4. "But I understand Epic's position with it, and quite frankly they are paying through the nose to build their store.

"All credit to them, it's fantastic, and we'll take some of their money, thank you very much."
If Epic continues at this pace, it could well topple Steam from the top spot one day. I'm sure that'd go down well with all the PC gamers that seem to see the rivalry as more of an actual war.
