I call Shogun.

For obvious reasons, we're all looking at ways to stay occupied these days that don't involve leaving the house and spending an entire Saturday in a beer garden. I know, it's hard. The good news is that more and more developers and publishers have been stepping up to offer free games in a bid to keep us happy while we wait out this storm.

Sony and Ubisoft have made some pretty sweet offerings in the past few weeks, while the Epic Games Store is always on hand once a week with one or two freebies. I've been keeping track of all the best stuff via a weekly free games roundup every Friday, but this particular freebie appeared just a little too late to appear in last week's roundup - but it's such a great game that I can't wait until the end of this week to share it with you.

From 6pm today (April 27th) until Friday, May 1st at 6pm, the excellent Total War: Shogun 2 will be free to download and keep on Steam. If you can't quite wait for Sucker Punch's Ghost Of Tsushima to scratch that samurai itch, this game will more than satisfy your cravings. I really cannot recommend it enough - and not just because it's free.

For those that aren't familiar, Shogun 2 offers a fascinating blend of turn-based strategy and and real-time tactics. Set in 16th century feudal Japan, in the aftermath of the Ōnin War, Shogun sees players take on the role of a clan as they fight for dominance and rule throughout the country. It's awesome.

The game was massively well-received when it first launched for PC back in 2011, and currently has an impressive 90 on Metacritic, if you're the kind of person who's really bothered by that kind of thing. Even I had a great time with it, and I tend to not enjoy these kinds of games at all... because I suck at them.

It's beautifully written, boasts some fantastic campaigns, and looks utterly gorgeous. Whether you're a history buff, looking for something to kill time, or just think samurai are neat (which we all do), this is the game for you right now. I mean, for the low price of nothing, you could do a hell of a lot worse than check this out, right?

I like to think most of you stopped reading this and went straight to Steam as soon as you saw the words Total War: Shogun 2 and free, but if you are still here? Go away. Go away now and download this game while you still can.
