The Fallout games offer a bleak view of the future. Most of humanity is dead and what's left has siloed itself away into remote settlements. Almost everything is irradiated and the food and water people have access to is also what's slowly killing them. Humans rarely help one another, instead seeing what they can exploit and steal from their neighbours. Maybe, though, that's all because it's also a world people forgot how to pet dogs.
In Fallout 4 you could pet a single dog in the world - you companion, Dogmeat. It was like your character's super power, except it only worked on one dog. Which is a sad existence, I think we can all agree. Thanks to a modder's hard work - I can only assume it meant searching through all of the game's source code in assembly language - you can now pet every darn dog in the game.
Now, there are a few rules about petting the dogs - as any frequent visitor to a petting zoo will tell you. #1 you can't be armed. As any dog owner will tell you, you should holster and blades or guns before petting a dog. #2 You can't pet a dog while wearing power armour. You'll know this from the power armour user manual, but you're liable to crush any non-armoured organism you pet while wearing an exoskeleton. And, finally, #3 you need to have unlocked the 'Animal Friend' perk. You wouldn't ask it of an animal to trust itself to be petted by anyone who hadn't chosen to invest in the Animal Friend perk, would you?
To download the 'Pet Any Dog' mod you'll want to head over to Nexus Mods. There you can find instructions from modder Sagittarius22 on how to pet dogs responsibly.
Go and show the wasteland how a human with love in their heart lives!
