'Final Fantasy 14' Is Now Free-To-Play All The Way To Level 60

That's what I call a free trial.

Final Fantasy XIV has just generously widened the net in regards to its definition of a "free trial". Anyone tempted to dive into the Final Fantasy MMORPG and see what all the fuss is about can now enjoy a huge chunk of it, free of charge. From now on, you'll be able to raise characters up to level 60 and enjoy all story content through the Heavensward expansion without paying a single penny.

That, according to people familiar with the game, is roughly 100 hours of completely free content. Probably more if you really enjoy taking your time with these kinds of games. Square Enix also clarified that anyone who owns A Realm Reborn and the Starter Edition will have their games updated to include any of the expanded free trial content they might otherwise have missed out on.

There are just a few caveats to this news, as it's still a free trial for a premium game at the end of the day. Certain activities are still exclusive to those who pay the game's subscription free, including forming parties, joining Free Companies, and making use of the in-game auction house. If you want access to these premium activities, you're going to need to cough up some cash. Still, as far as free trials go, this is one of the better ones I've ever seen.

I've never played Final Fantasy XIV myself, but it seems to be widely regarded as one of the most expansive and rewarding MMORPGs available today. It certainly can't hurt to try it out with such a hefty free trial on offer, right? That's assuming I don't get so into the game that my wife ends up leaving me because I've locked myself in the spare room with nothing but a PC and a bucket to make toilet in. That could happen, I guess.

In other Final Fantasy news, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed that the second instalment of Cloud's rebooted saga is now in full development. He explained that the team is working to ensure it releases "as soon as possible", but that we'll need to patient as we wait for further updates.
