Red Dead Redemption 2 modders appear to have revived the 'Hot Coffee' mod, first seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Harmless fun, you might think - but the action seems to have upset Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Allegedly, Rockstar has issued a take-down request to the modders in question.

The 'Hot Coffee' mod was first discovered years ago among cut content in the source code for the PC version of GTA: San Andreas. Of course, modders will mod, so it soon surfaced for the public to enjoy (if enjoy is quite the right word). But even then, the player being able to take part in a mini-game that involved the main character, CJ, getting it on with his girlfriend really rather cheesed Rockstar off. For the sequence to happen, your girlfriend had to invite you in for coffee first, hence the mod picking up the name 'Hot Coffee'.

Fast forward to 2020, and modders for Red Dead Redemption 2 have recreated the 'Hot Coffee' mod and inserted it into the 2018-released game. Now, protagonist Arthur Morgan can take part in that same mini-game; only this time there are no girlfriends to choose from, so he picks up sex workers instead.

Rockstar isn't happy and YouTuber Swegta claims that one of the modders has been approached by a legal representative of the company. You can watch his video on the matter here - though be warned, it's NSFW.

One of the mod creators, Unlosing, spoke to PCGamesN about the action that has supposedly been taken by the company. "I was a bit surprised and didn't expect Take-Two to worry about a single-player mod this much. I find it crazy how Rockstar Games can add hookers to its games, but when someone uploads a mod (not even of the same quality) it's suddenly 'inappropriate'."

"The mod doesn't contain any nudity or nude models, and only uses assets that are still in the game," they continue. "The animations are from the drunk bar mission with Lenny (which are still in the game), and the 'moaning' noises are simply the sounds the [character models] make when they get injured. Also, they mention 'online services', however this mod is only available for single-player. To answer your question: no, I don't think it's fair."

Rockstar's stance on modding has generally been pretty relaxed in recent years, as long as you keep it to single-player versions of the game. In fact, we even reported on a mod that lets you experience the entirety of GTA V's story mode in first-person VR. Clearly, however, its patience only goes so far though - and, as with most legal statements, there is a disclaimer which states "Take-Two reserves the right to object to any third-party project, or to revise, revoke and/or withdraw this statement at any time in their own discretion." Which seems to cover the action in regard to this particular mod.

But despite that, as well as the alleged take-down request, it seems that Unlosing isn't ready to take down his work, telling PCGamesN: "I'm really not sure what I want to do yet. I don't plan on taking the mod down any time soon."
