Nvidia has shared the results of a new study in which it claims that playing at the highest possible framerates gives gamers a big leg up when playing online games. Most of us would likely argue that yes, obviously playing a game at 60fps has a distinct advantage over 30fps... but after a certain point does a higher framerate not become slightly redundant?
According to Nvidia, not at all. The results of its latest study, conducted earlier this year, found that the kill/death ratio of a gamer is an incredible 90 percent better when playing at 180fps, versus 60fps. See for yourself below.

"We can see there is a correlation between gamers' average FPS and K/D ratios in PUBG and Fortnite," Nvidia wrote." At 180 FPS, players' K/D ratios are 90% better than players at 60 FPS... put in the context of FPS benefits such as animation smoothness, reduced ghosting and tearing, and lower system latency outlined in the article, the positive relationship shown in the chart makes a bit of sense."
Now, I know what you're probably thinking at this point. It's pretty much the exact same thing I thought when I saw Nvidia's study this morning. This research was published by a company who literally want to sell you high-end PC hardware, so of course they're going to tell us that the highest possible framerate gives us a huge advantage when gaming.
However, PC Gamer points out that various other outlets, such as Linus Tech Tips, have conducted their own studies and found super-high framerates to have a positive effect on performance.
Take a look at their video from back in July this year to dig into their findings. It's an interesting watch. And they're not trying to sell us high refresh rate monitors. At least if they are, they're being fairly subtle about it.

"For many years, esports pros have tuned their hardware for ultra-high frame rates - 144 or even 240fps - and they pair their hardware with high-refresh rate monitors," Nvidia wrote in an another study, earlier in the year.
"In fact, ProSettings.net and BattleRoyaleSettings.com report that 99% of Battle Royale Pros (Fortnite, PUBG and Apex Legends) are using 144Hz monitors or above, and 30% are using 240Hz monitors."
There we are, then. I don't know who needs to hear it, but there's the scientific reason you should treat yourself to a graphics card and monitor upgrade this Christmas. Don't do it for yourself. Do it for science.
